Fun with Audio
2002.05.11

I had some fun with phone calls today. One of my roomies hasn't yet heard/seen "me" yet and he called my cell phone. I was out with some TS friends and the phone was buried at the bottom of my purse (instead of being clipped to my hip) so I didn't hear it. On the off chance that I might have missed a call I dug around the purse and when I pulled out the phone it read "1 missed call". Oh. Oops.
Seeing as how I was in Girl Mode at the time I pondered whether or not I should call him back as I was or revert to Boy Mode. I figured it was probably about time he heard me---my other roomie knows what I sound like. So I dialed his number and after a few rings the conversation went sorta something like:*

The phone is answered: "Hello?"

I say: "Seth?"

"Yes?"

"Sorry I missed your call."

"..."

"Um, do you know who this is?"

"No...?"

"It's (boy name)."

"No way..."

"No, really! It's me!"

"Is this a joke? Who are you?"

"Puchu.** You really don't believe me do you?" I switch back to Boy Mode.*** "Now do you believe me?"

"But ... how did you do that with your voice?"

Back in Girl Mode: "Uhmmm, I've been training it for three years."

"You're not using any equipment?"

"Nope. Just a lot of practice."

"Wow! That's really cool!"

"Yeah. So what did you call about? ..."

*Our conversation was much longer and complicated than this but the sentiment was the same.
**This is a term only known to my circle of friends that has no real meaning whatsoever. The origins of this word are long and complicated. I'll give you a special prize if you really know where it comes from.
***I can switch between Modes almost instantaneously, but I usually don't because it does cause a bit of strain...
And the conversation went on from there. I had tried to prove it was me by switching back to my Boy Mode voice for a few words but it really threw him. I think he finally figured it out in the end and I think I thoroughly got his attention. As my other roomie said later, and I quote, "You must have really messed with his head!" Yeah.

(Hey, this is all in good fun. With all the absurdity of the transition process you gotta have a sense of humor about this situation right?)
